Youth Wrestling Q&R

Q: At what age should my child start wrestling?

R: There is no right or wrong answer here. Every child matures different and we don’t always know how they will respond when participating in a new sport. Kids can start practicing as early as 4-5 years old. In today’s wrestling, your first two years of experience are considered “Novice” and they should only compete against kids similar age and experience. Here at CV, we would love for you to come try it out. We will work with you if you have any uncertainty. We usually have 40-50 new wrestlers every year.

Q: What equipment does my child need to wrestle?

R: A CV uniform (singlet or 2-piece set), wrestling shoes and headgear. Uniforms are ordered through registration. Shoes and headgear can be purchased online or at your local sporting goods store. Athletic clothes and a water bottle at practice are preferred.

Q: What is novice vs open experience and what does that mean?

R: Each child should compete in novice only or open only competitions. Novice is categorized as having less than 2 years of experience. Kids in their first 2 years of wrestling will only compete on the mat against other novice kids. Open wrestling means that anyone with any level of expereience can compete on the mat.

Q: Is wrestling only for boys?

R: NO! Girls wrestling is the fastest growing sport in the country. The number of girls participating has grown significantly over the last 10 years.

Q: Does my child need to wear a singlet?

R: A CV Singlet or Two-Piece Uniform is required for competition and will be ordered through registration. Our Two-Piece uniform consists of a compression shirt and fight shorts.

Q: Is my child too small to wrestle?

R: NO WAY! This is why many believe wrestling is a fanastic sport because anyone can wrestle. You wrestle against other kids similar in size.

Q: Are wrestlers required to lose weight?

R: NO! There is no weight cutting in youth wrestling. Even at a higher level, all national governing bodies, such as USA Wrestling now prohibit any form of rapid or unsafe weight loss.
